Madeline's Birth Story Part 1

September 28, 2018

Today is the day. I was due yesterday and since little Madeline didn't come on her own I'm getting induced. It’s 8 am and the hospital hasn’t called me in yet for an induction so the anticipation is killing me! I’m so excited yet a little nervous.

It's 9 am and the hospital said to call them if they hadn't called me yet, so I called and they said they were too busy to talk but would call me back in a half an hour. They called at 9:30 and said to be there by 10. I was like "Oh wow, thats quick, they should have said that at 9, lol" So I called Sabrina because she so nicely agreed to watch Juliette and Lincoln while Matt and I went to the hospital. The nice part about being induced was that Matt had work off already and we had a babysitter lined up and had a plan.

Juliette and Lincoln were excited for us and we left as Sabrina and Indy came in. It felt weird to be headed to the hospital and not be in any pain or contractions but I was excited. We got checked in at about 10:30 am and I was dilated to a 3 and 90% effaced. It was just a waiting game at this point. They put an iv in me and got pitocin going. The doctor came in to break my water around 2:00 pm and we were surprised to see lots of green green meconium.

I had to pee a lot- like every ten minutes and every time I got up out of bed Matt and I could not stop laughing at the mess I was creating. Matt is the best support and my rock. I started feeling lots of contractions and around 3:00 they came in and gave me an epidural and I was dilated to a 5. It seems like the epidural got easier every time and better each time. It really wasnt that painful and brought so much relief. I could still feel my body but no pain.

I thought it would still be a while so I just rested. Then at 4:30 they came to check me and I was dilated to a 10 and they called the doctor in. My mom and Matt were there with the nurses helping me. I texted Karine and Greg and my friend Tiffany to come over but I knew I didnt give them much time since I was already at a 10. They were on their way.

I started pushing at 4:37 pm. We could see her tiny head and lots of hair. Dr Barton said "she has green hair!" We laughed. I could see her tiny forehead wrinkling before she was all the way out. Deep breaths and a few pushes later the doctor set her on my tummy and I said "She's here!" She was born at 4:53 pm. Matt cut her cord and we heard her tiny little cry. She is so adorable! 7 lbs 0 oz and 20 1/2 inches long.

The NICU team was in the room since there was meconium in the sac and since my other babies were small, but she was healthy and crying on her own. They said she looked great and I felt soo relived because for some reason I was nervous and just more worried than usual. Being a mother is one of the best callings in life and I love little tiny babies. After they cleaned her off a bit and weighed her I fed her and did skin to skin. Our bodies are so amazing.

They took me to the recovery room and we got some pictures of our new little cutie. We liked the names Madeline and Cambria, at first Juliette didnt like Madeline and we were pretty sure that was going to be her name so one day Juliette said "Ok if she has brown hair lets name her Madeline and if its blonde hair lets name her Cambria" Both Juliette and Lincoln had dark hair as babies so I agreed, haha. Our baby had brown hair and we decided to name her Madeline Jane Romero. She is beautiful.

Juliette and Lincoln came to meet her around 7 pm and we got our first family photo of 5. I love the Big Sister and Big Brother shirts I got them off amazon here!

Lincoln and Juliette were both so gentle and adorable with her.

Sabrina and Tim helped them make these adorable cards for Maddie while we were at the hospital.

We are so blessed with such great supportive families! Greg, Karine, my mom, dad, David, Marcus, Sabrina, Tim and Indy all came to visit that first day. As everyone left I was just soaking in being a mother of three and feeling so happy. Matt went home to put the kids to bed and get a good rest.

I noticed Madeline's breathing seemed very short and fast while I was feeding her, and even more as she laid in the bassinet. I mentioned it to the nurses and doctors and they said "oh newborns just have to get used to breathing air, after being inside for 9 months" I thought yeah thats true, our bodies are pretty cool and have a lot of adjusting to do outside the womb.

But around midnight when they came to check our vitals I mentioned her breathing again and they said her levels were normal, but it felt off to me like something was wrong. We went to sleep and around 7 in the morning the next day, September 29, the pediatrician came and he said the same thing- she's just getting used to breathing air and said she looked good. Around 8 am I fed her and she sounded like a little pug that couldnt quite get a good breath. I mentioned it to the nurse again (I think it was a new nurse after shift change) and she said let me go get the pediatrician, by this point Madeline's chest was raising and falling so rapidly and never slowed down or took a break. She was taking so many breaths every minute. I called Matt to tell him what was going on and that I was worried about her. The pediatrician came in and took her to the nursery to test her blood oxygen level.

A reading of 95-100 percent is normal, her oxygen level was below 90%. She got hooked up to some oxygen and her levels kept dropping. I was trying to hold it together but couldnt hold back the tears every time the monitor beeped and her oxygen dropped down again. Matt came to the hospital and my mom watched Juliette and Lincoln for the day. The doctor let me know that Madeline needed to go to the NICU and they'd let us know what was going on and if she'd be okay. The minutes seemed like hours and the hours seemed like days. It was painful to wait and wonder and worry. For some reason my mind was going to the worst case scenarios and I was freaking out.

The Rest will be on Part 2...
